Shay & Adrian’s wedding

Wedding / Photographed by Chelsea Gray /December 12th 2013 / Sandals Grande Riviera, Ocho Rios  (Jamaica)

In December I jetted off to meet up with and photograph the intimate wedding of Shay and Adrian, who had invited a dozen of their closest family and friends to experience an exotic wedding in Jamaica. Our bride and groom were both originally from the Caribbean, so Jamaica was an easy choice of destination to meet up with family from the surrounding islands. Now it always humbles me when couples opt to bring us along on their destination weddings. I think they can automatically feel the sheer enthusiasm bursting out of me when those key words: “destination wedding” are uttered in our client meetings. This time, I brought along my boyfriend (as the wedding was too small for 2 photographers to document), and he and I were treated like family all day. By the end of the night, we were dancing to Trinidadian hits and knocking back dark rum and cokes with the wedding party. Nothing can prepare you for the kind of service that the staff at the brand new Sandals Grande Riviera brought to the table. It was beyond excellent, and we most definitely will be coming back for another week sometime in the future. Check out the reception pics, where the staff members broke into full dance with us by the end of the night. Those Trinidadian and Jamaican tunes were reverberating through the hills!!! Lastly, if you’re considering a destination wedding, their Montreal-based planner Lisa Mitchell of ‘One Love Honeymoons’ was super professional and accommodating. Contact her today!

Tania & Jason

Wedding / Photographed by Chelsea Gray & Elizabeth Delage /Saturday, February 22nd 2014

Over 4 years ago I first worked with Tania Tassone (of Blanc Events) at a country wedding out in the Townships. On barely 2 hours of sleep on the plane, (Neel and I had shot a wild wedding the night before in Chicago) we were high on adrenaline and ready to rock.

Yes, we had a few setbacks earlier on in the day with a rainy ceremony (it eventually down-poured all night), but Neel and I carried on and photographed the couple in barns and dry areas while Tania held her own, carefully setting up an umbrella station for guests at the foot of the tent for coming and going. At the end of the night, my feet were soaked in mud and I walked up to Tania, gave her a big hug and told her that I couldn’t wait to show her what we came up with. I think it was at that moment that we mutually agreed that we were all troopers of the same kind. Workhorses, perfectionists, wedding ninjas?, whatever you like to call it, we were that!  And we’ve been working together ever since…

Fast forward to 2013, and Ms. Tassone decides to announce to the world that she and the dashing Mr. Jason Girosan were to wed in early 2014. We were elated for her, and secretly hoped she would invite us along to (at least) have a drink and dance during her reception….? No, I thought- Tania would probably choose to marry on some fabulous beach far faaaar away from town. We’ll never get to see her wed in person, I thought Guess we were wrong!

Tania arranged to have Jason meet with me so I could get to know him and explain our approaches to wedding day documenting. It was a breeze to meet with him, and I must admit they seemed like the most down-to-earth, relaxed couple ever. “This should be easy” I thought. We’ll just follow them along on their day, and they’ll want a relaxed little wedding with family and friends, right?. Well it turns out that Tania had chosen the opposite. She chose the most elegant, extravagant, (and humongous!) reception space in all of Montreal- the old CIBC bank-turned-reception space Theatre St-James. Her vision was a dark, romantic and moody winter wonderland set among brassy old bank vaults and mysterious safe rooms. Now I’ve seen some pretty incredible weddings in my time, but this was hands down one of the most elegantly executed EVENTS  I’ve ever witnessed. This most certainly was the WEDDING OF THE YEAR.

The highlights of the night included:

  1. A winter wonderland ceremony, set with white trees and elegant uplighting
  2. Both parents of the bride & groom were asked to renew their vows during the ceremony
  3. An avante-garde duo (harpist and dj) entertained during the cocktail hour
  4. 2 dj’s played during the course of the night
  5. A saxophonist opened the dancefloor
  6. Before the father-daughter dance, Tania broadcasted a hilarious recording of one of her father’s voice mail messages. Song was “I just called to say I love you”
  7. Opera singer performed
  8. Flutter confetti flew from the roof during the First dance
  9. All of Montreal’s best caterers were used for various themed stations
  10. Instead of a “bouquet toss” the bride passed out flowers to all the fabulous single ladies in her life
  11. Bridal portraits were taken in old bank vaults
  12. An outdoor bonfire SMORES station was in place for those exiting the reception
  13. The Directors Showband entertained the guests with live performances
  • Check out the photos below, and we thank you so much Tania & Jason for allowing us to document and enjoy your amazing night!

Winter Bachelorette Session

Bachelorette session / Photographed by Chelsea Gray /Saturday, February 8th 2014

A few months ago I received an email for a bachelorette party photo shoot in Montreal. After a few back and forth emails between the event’s coordinator, Allie, it seemed like an easy gig. I was to photograph the girls, having fun and goofing off as per Bachelorette Party standards, but I was perplexed though, when she wrote:”We wanted the girls to arrive at the castle for around 5 and then we would need to get ready and have some munchies, prior to the shoot.” CASTLE? I thought…Did I get the location of the shoot wrong?!

Turns out the session was supposed to be at the Chateau Vieux Montreal in the Old Montreal. As per their website photos, I figured I could do some fun pillow fight shots on the giant beds, and pimpin’ whirlpool shots in the basement grotto, but alas, we were turned down by the staff at the mention of a “professional photo session”. We would have been charged an extra $250/hr to go ahead with a photo shoot so we nixed that idea and headed out to the snow and took advantage of Old Montreal’s gorgeous winter landscape.

Kina & Eric

Wedding / Photographed by Chelsea Gray, Elizabeth Delage & Haley Withers / Montreal, QC. / Saturday, November 24th 2012

Catching up with our blog posts this morning, I thought it would be the right time to finally unveil a special shoot from last November- NHL superstar Eric Lindros’ wedding!

Working alongside Montreal’s premier event coordinator Danie Deschênes of Oxygène Événements, the hush-hush nuptials were most definitely exhilarating to photograph. It was a very brisk November evening, and the steps of the L’église Saint-Viateur were lit up by hundreds of flickering candles while the guests inside were treated to a ceremony that concluded with a surprise “Love Actually” style rendition of “All you need is love” by the children’s choir Fondation Singsing. It was off to the Ritz-Carlton for the remainder of the night, which included a perfectly executed ‘champagne sabering’ by the bride and a quite a few cheeky speeches by the bridal party. We’d like to thank Kina and Eric for allowing us to display some of our favourite images with our followers. At the moment, we’re expecting to hear from one of Canada’s most prestigious wedding magazines on print approval, so for now we’ll be sharing just a shot or two of the evening’s decor. More to be printed soon!

Location: Ritz-Carleton Montreal
Coordination: Danie Deschênes (Oxygène Événements)

Entertainment: DJ Rollergirl
Band: Paul Chacra Entertainment
